Until I joined in 2011, Astral Media’s TV channel websites used a “.mobile” domain name specifically for devices with small touchscreens (tablets and phones).
I created this sketch for a meeting where I was helping the design and project management team better understand the new buzzword of 2012, “Responsive Design”. This new method, which was the reason I joined the team, disrupted the department’s established work practices. Note that at the time of this mockup, it was still too early to fully embrace “Mobile First”, which became the industry standard a year later.
In early 2013, I initiated a second change in our work methodology: to meet the project managers’ need to maximize production speed, I proposed a modular approach where each element common to all our products is programmed by the back-end team and supported by unit tests in a central Git repository, distributed into branches for each of the different television channels’ websites. Today, component-based development has become the standard for SaaS solutions.
